چکیده

Denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DNPAOs) are very promising for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. While during denitrification, emission of a greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O), may occur. In this study, DNPAOs were enriched in a lab-scale reactor, and N2O emission was examined under different electron acceptor conditions. During the anoxic phase, with the uptake of phosphorus, denitrification of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) was observed without the accumulation of nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N). In general, a very low amount of N2O was produced with nitrate as the electron acceptor, independent of the applied different nitrate concentrations. However, with nitrite as the electron acceptor, a much higher N2O emission occurred. The N2O emission factor to the denitrified NO2N was 6.2%, 5.3% and 4.9% at the initial NO2-N concentration of 10, 20 and 40 mg l, respectively. In addition, a much higher N2O emission occurred with the co-existence of NO3-N and NO2-N. The initial organic carbon concentration had no significant effect on N2O emission with NO3-N as the electron acceptor. When stored organic carbon by DNPAOs was used as the electron donor, N2O emission was mainly dependent on the electron acceptor.

Effect of nitrite on nitrous oxide generation and emission during denitrifying phosphorus removal

Nitrous oxide (N2O) generation and emission may hamper the wide application of denitrifying phosphorus removal technology. In this study, batch experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of nitrite on N2O generation and emission during denitrifying phosphorus removal. Compared to NO3-N, N2O emission was much higher when NO2-N was used as the electron acceptor. N2O emission had no ob...

Aquatic environment Removal of total cyanide in coking wastewater during a coagulation process: Significance of organic polymers

Temperature is an important physical factor, which strongly influences biomass and metabolic activity. In this study, the effects of temperature on the anoxic metabolism of nitrite (NO2 ) to nitrous oxide (N2O) by polyphosphate accumulating organisms, and the process of the accumulation of N2O (during nitrite reduction), which acts as an electron acceptor, were investigated using 91% ± 4% Candi...

Nitritation and N2O Emission in a Denitrification and Nitrification Two-Sludge System Treating High Ammonium Containing Wastewater

The effective management of high ammonium containing wastewater is important for the sustainable development of the wastewater industry. A pre-denitrification and post-nitrification two-sludge system was proposed to treat high ammonium containing wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios. In the system, pre-denitrification was adopted to use organic carbon in raw wastewater efficientl...
